Team India is all set to start their UK tour with the 1st T20I against Ireland today, at 6 PM IST (1:30 PM local time) at the Civil Service Cricket Ground in Stormont, Belfast. Days before the match, Belfast was in the news due to civil unrest, which cast a shadow of uncertainty over the first match. Now, it is the weather forecast that has caused some doubts.
The 2-match T20I series against Ireland will mark a fresh T20I cycle for the Indian cricket team after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup. Since retaining the trophy, the team has gone through multiple changes, including a change in captaincy.
First match for Shreyas Iyer as India captain
Shreyas Iyer has joined the team after a long absence from the T20 International, as the skipper, in the place of Suryakumar Yadav, who has been dismissed from the leadership role and from the team entirely because of a long slump.
Iyer, who proved his leadership credentials and batting skills as a captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with three different franchises, including the Punjab Kings, last played for India in the format in December 2023 against Australia. It will be interesting to see who the Mumbaikar will bat tonight after the long absence, and that too with the new responsibility, the responsibility for leading the national team under overseas conditions.
The match in Ireland is under threat because of a possible thunderstorm
If the weather conditions are to be believed, then there will be chances of rain during the match time as well, but slightly lower than during the daytime. Over the Northern Ireland region, there are alerts issued for moderate thunderstorms throughout the day.
“Whilst many places will miss them, scattered thunderstorms may either arrive from the south or break out through the rest of this morning and more especially through this afternoon and early evening before decaying or clearing later this evening,” according to the UK Met Office.
“The west of Northern Ireland is probably most at risk of seeing thunderstorms, but anywhere within the warning area may see some activity. Where thunderstorms do occur, heavy rain, large hail, gusty winds, and frequent lightning are all possible, with 15-30 mm of rain falling in a short space of time in a few places.”
As the forecast says, the weather conditions are expected to improve later this evening; however, the Ireland vs India 1st T20I could be interrupted by adverse weather. According to local time, the match starts in the early evening at 1:30 PM.
